The Temple of the Sun was built around 1450. It was built by one of the kings, Pachacutec, whose tomb is thought to be underneath the temple.
It is easily identifiable for two reasons. First, it is at the highest point in Machu Picchu in order to be closer to the sun. Also, it is the only structure with a rounded shape.
This structure was an important religious temple. The Incas built it for their sun god. It was also an important scientific center as it was used to observe the sun and solar events.
It was used for religious sacrifices and ceremonies to honor their sun god. It was also used as a place to observe the sun and skies.
