SS United States

            The SS United States (model by Mercator) is seem departing on another voyage, as her tug escort veers away, with only the pilot boat to accompany her to open sea. From her maiden voyage July 3,  1952, she completed 400 round trip trans-Atlantic voyages, finishing her 17 year liner career November 7, 1969. With a total of  seven days at sea, the 11 day round trip  demanded a tight schedule for her provisioning in harbor, which included, among other things, 67,000  lb. of dairy products, 74,000 lb. of meats and poultry, 2000 lb of tobacco products, 4400 gallons of alcohol, and the changing of 35 tons of linens. Today, she is moored in Philadelphia, stripped of her machinery, fittings and furnishings, a sorry sight of rust and peeling paint.
