squirrel at home :) - a photo on Flickriver

            One of many ground squirrels, which I saw on the steep sand shore in Santa Monica. There were a lot of holes like this in the sand :)

The California ground squirrel (Otospermophilus beecheyi), also known as the Beechey ground squirrel, is a common and easily observed ground squirrel of the western United States and the Baja California Peninsula. As is typical for ground squirrels, California ground squirrels live in burrows, which they excavate themselves. Some burrows are occupied communally, but each squirrel has its own entrance. In the colder parts of their range, California ground squirrels hibernate for several months, but in areas where winters have no snow, most squirrels are active year-round. California ground squirrels are often regarded as pests in gardens and parks, since they eat ornamental plants and trees. They commonly feed on seeds, such as oats, but also eat insects such as crickets and grasshoppers, as well as various fruits.

Jedna z wielu wiewiórek, które widziałam na stromym piaszczystym brzegu w Santa Monica. Miały tam wykopane swoje nory w piasku  :)

Susłouch plamkowany (Otospermophilus beecheyi), znany też jako suseł kalifornijski lub wiewiórka ziemna, to pospolity gatunek ssaka z rodziny wiewiórkowatych zamieszkujący zachodnie Stany Zjednoczone i Półwysep Kalifornijski. Jak to jest typowe dla wiewiórek ziemnych, żyją one w norach, które same wykopują. Niektóre nory zamieszkują wspólnie, ale każda wiewiórka ma własne wejście. W chłodniejszych rejonach, w których zamieszkują, wiewiórki kalifornijskie hibernują przez kilka miesięcy, ale na obszarach, gdzie zimy nie mają śniegu, większość wiewiórek jest aktywna przez cały rok. Susły kalifornijskie są często uważane za szkodniki w ogrodach i parkach, ponieważ zjadają rośliny ozdobne i uszkadzają drzewa. Zwykle żywią się nasionami, takimi jak owies, ale jedzą także owady, takie jak świerszcze i koniki polne, a także różne owoce.
