First Day of HSTs - a photo on Flickriver

First Day of HSTs

            This was platform 1 at London Paddington on Monday 4th October 1976, the first day of HST operation at 125mph - though some did start before this date, but running at lower speeds to the old timetable (see comment below.) My memory was that this was the 0700 to Swansea - but the clock says 0750, so it must have been at 0800. First 'Inter-City' services from London have got earlier over the years since. You will see the train is no less than the prototype HST - 252 001. I rode on this to Cardiff. There is another HST on platform 3, forming the 0805 to Bristol.
Okay, its a pretty ropey picture, but then it was hand-held and taken early on a dank and dreary morning on 50ASA film. I wish now I had bought along a tripod as some others had done.
