Common Claybank Tiger Beetle (Cicindela limbalis), a very colorful tiger beetle. It seems to only be the fourth observation of the species in SK on inaturalist. Valeport, Saskatchewan, Canada. 23 April 2024.

Cicindela limbalis, the common claybank tiger beetle, is a species of tiger beetle. The length of the beetle is 12–16 millimeters (0.5–0.6 in). The beetle's back is reddish purple and sometimes may be dull green or brown. The species can commonly be found on steep, moist bare clay soil. The beetle can live for 3 years.[1][2]

Distribution and habitat
Common claybank tiger beetles are found in North America. They are present in the Yukon (although they are not common, being recognized as critically imperiled/vulnerable there) and from the central Mackenzie River valley south through the Rockies and east across southern Canada to the Maritimes. They are also found in the United States of America in the Great Lakes region and New England.[3]

Their habitat is bare clay slopes, often on river banks.[3]

Size: body length 12-16 mm

Identification
color of dorsal surface varies greatly, from brick red to metallic red to reddish-purple to reddish-green, and rarely dull green or brown; elytral markings highly variable: (humeral lunule complete, broken, or rarely absent; middle band complete and sharply angled or consisting only of a transverse dash; apical lunule complete or broken; marginal line always absent)
many specimens have green on the outer and inner margins of the elytra, which is the basis of the common name, Green-margined Tiger Beetle

usually steep, moist bare clay soil, including open hill tops, dirt roads, and especially river or stream banks (US Geological Survey)
