Bee View. Osmia cornuta, European Orchard Bee, on Garden Grape-hyacinth, Muscari armeniacum, Hortus Botanicus, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

            Bluish-purple Grape-hyacinths are among early garden flowers in many gardens and also in the Hortus. For us humans it's hard to see the stamens and pistils because the flowers hang downward. So in the photo I've added an inset more or less from a Bee's point of view.
This is a male European Orchard Bee. They're not common in the northern Low Countries but more so in Flanders. I've garnered that tidbit of knowledge from a wonderful field manual for the bees of Great Britain and Ireland by Steven Falk, well-illustrated by Richard Lewington  (2015). It was translated and edited for The Netherlands and Flanders by Guido O. Keijl and Menno Reemer (2017).
