Capital Hound. Mannes and Dronefly, Eristalis tenax, on Matricaria chamomilla, Wild Chamomile, Assen, The Netherlands

            On my way up to Groningen, I alighted from the train at the Drenthe provincial capital, Assen. I hadn't been here for a while but wanted to see a few temporary exhibitions in the local museum. The station and its square have been completely renewed, rebuilt and redecorated. I had to blink my eyes to properly look at this Huge Statue.
This is Mannes, the station hound. He stands 6 metres high and with his back to the city is apparently waiting for his giant master coming in on a later train. Mannes is the product of two Dutch sculptors, Maurice Nio (1959-) and Q.S. Serafijn (1960-); the Hound is a multimedia 'event', blowing steam when it senses children are around, and with a showing of lights at night.
Of course, he immediately reminded me of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's hound of the Baskervilles (1901). That Dog was black and painted with phosphorescent hue to scare the Baskervilles to death. It seems Mannes was originally to have been black as well, but the people of Assen convinced the artists to use a lighter color. Mannes is made of accoya wood.
The station square is still partly under construction and the sandy place gives rise to a smattering of Wild Chamomile, which can be steeped in hot water to calm the nerves - perhaps not unwisely after this Hound Vision. Chamomile is being visited by a Dronefly, Eristalis tenax.
