London & Country - Leyland National Greenway's - or any which way to Brentford!

            Can you re-body and integral bus? Well Blackburn based East Lancashire Coachbuilders certainly gave it a go, with the Leyland National Greenway project whereby the upgrading of Mk.1 and the better Mk.II Nationals were given a refurbishment in an attempt to prolong the life of a Leyland National bus. Some were retrofitted with Gardner 6LXB units in place of the fixed head and sometimes troublesome Leyland 'clacker clacker' 510 unit and to my mind the far better Leyland L11 and TL11 units, although I did like the sound of the 510s. London & Country had a fair number of a motley collection of both versions of the original Workington built integral Nationals rebuilt. These two Greenway's are seen here at Staines Bus Station, on 04/06/1994, prior to working out to Brentford, via different routes. Looks like another Greenway converted National is seen here, lurking in the background. On the left, facing the camera, is 348, NIW6508. Converted in 02/1993, this started life as West Yorkshire Road Car - York-West Yorkshire, 3457, GUA821N. a 11351/1R model, new in 10/1974. On the right and converted in 03/1993, is, 352, NIW6512, which started life as a dual-doored National 2 NL116AL11/1R, that was new to Crosville in 01/1982, numbered SNL6 and registered FCA6X. 348 ended it's life back in Yorkshire as a motorsport support vehicle after working for Colchester Borough Transport and Arriva Fox County, while 352 looks like it ended it's working days for Arriva at Colchester, again having worked for Colchester Borough Transport. London & Country had it's origins in London Country(South West) who were formed on the split of LCBS in 09/1986 and were purchased by Drawlane in 02/1988, being re-named London & Country in 04/1989.

The camera was a Praktica MTL3 with the film being the excellent FujiChrome.
