            Another day, another trolley...

The sun and the humidity turn 
Ba Đình Square's concrete into a simmering wok. 

The guards are alert in the shade but there’s this bloke with his wee folding handle flatbed trolley returning from dropping something off or on his way to make a pick up, with his nón lá (conical hat) also hard at work providing shade for his head.

Chu tich (President) Ho Chi Minh’s body rests in embalmed state in the mausoleum behind Trolley Bloke, but as Uncle Ho was chef’s helper aboard a ship I’d reckon he was no stranger to wheeling stuff around, more than likely trundling galley loads of food back from warehouses and markets.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

After Ho died in 1969, ground was broken for the construction of the tomb in 1973, and it was completed in August 1975.

Construction of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum began a few years after Ho's death in 1969. Workers broke ground on September 2, 1973, and officially finished upon the mausoleum's inauguration on August 29, 1975. The architect was clearly “Lenin” on the whole communist monumental asthetic, so there’s lots of squared off grey granite, bulked out with twenty formidable pillars.

The Mausoleum is to the left and right of two equally writ large reviewing stand, and everything is orientated to provide a splendid view across the square to the Vietnam Assembly House, as well as, of course, dominating the view from the square itself. 

Ho actually wanted his ashes scattered across his country, but leaders don’t always get what they want.
