SELNEC 4597, Piccadilly, Manchester, 1972

            Amidst a bustling scene of daily life, SELNEC Daimler Fleetline 4597 departs Piccadilly Gardens Bus Station bound for Greenbrow Road, Wythenshawe on a limited-stop service. 

New to Manchester in 1963, the bus still wears its rather plain Manchester Corporation red livery. 4597 was one of forty Metro-Cammell bodied Fleetlines placed into service between 1962 and 1963 by Manchester; many more Fleetlines would follow from late 1964 onwards. 

These boxy Metro-Cammell bodied Fleetlines were hard-worked buses, and by the mid 1970s, they were being withdrawn and sold for scrap. A lucky few later examples survived the culling seeing further use, and even fewer surviving into preservation. As far as I am aware, no ex Manchester Fleetlines from this particular batch survives, but a solitary Manchester, Metro-Cammell bodied Atlantean of an almost identical design lives on with the Museum of Transport at Boyle Street in Manchester. 

I do not have a withdrawal date of 4597, but it would have more than likely met its end in one of the muddy breaker's yards near Barnsley, South Yorkshire in the mid to late 1970s. I welcome that information should someone be able to supply it.
