Waxing Gibbous Moon - a photo on Flickriver

The moon's elevation was about 45 degrees almost due south.
The sky was still blue, due to atmospherically scattered sunlight falling on the planet Earth. Blue wavelengths scatter more than yellows and reds so the sky looks blue in most directions. We see the moon through an atmosphere that scatters lots of blue to our eyes. That's why the moon in this photo appears blue even though the sun's radiation at a temperature of about 5000 degrees Kelvin is too cool to peak in the blue region of the visible spectrum. It peaks closer to the orange wavelengths if I recall correctly. (I can no longer trust my memory... LoL)
