God's Waterfall

            Or in Icelandic, Goðafoss.  The legend is that in 999 or 1000 AD, the lawspeaker (more or less the head of the Alþingi--the ruling body of Iceland), after deciding that Iceland would give up its pagan ways and adopt Christianity as the nation's religion, came to this waterfall and threw his pagan idols in, thus the name.  In any case, it is certainly a magnificent spot--one of the great waterfalls in all of Europe.  If they were a bit higher, they'd be even more famous.  Even with the relative dwarfism (it drops about 39 feet or 12 meters--which isn't actually tiny), they were one of my favorite sights during my trip here.

Since my remote trigger wasn't working, I had to use the timer for this shot.  It took me over 20 seconds to reach this spot and adopt a reasonable pose--which is the maximum duration of the timer.  So, I set it to take 8 photos with 2 seconds between shots at the end of that 20 seconds.  The first 2 or three photos were of me scrambling clumsily up this rock--something a tad scary as I'm definitely higher than the top of the falls, so a fall would result in significant injury, no matter if I landed on the rocks or water below.  Making no claim of bravery here.  :-)  I was very careful.

Another spot I would have payed a great deal to have a little sun.

On a side note, I saw someone back there enormous motor home [YIKES!!!  THERE??  OMG--I've forgotten how to spell?!!  That's THEIR, THEIR enormous motor home!] into someone's car in the parking lot here, and then drove off.  I got their license number and waited around until the occupants of the damaged car returned and gave them the info, along with my address and phone.  I got a card from them a month later thanking me, which was nice.  They didn't tell me what the outcome was, however.

Still another side note:  The jacket I'm wearing here?  I almost decided against taking it and bringing a light jacket instead--a decision that would have resulted in my purchasing a heavier jacket in Iceland.  It's just too darn chilly, too darn often to be without at least a moderately heavy coat.  I had just been thinking about conserving space, and since I can endure chilly fairly well, thought I might do without--but it would have been a really poor decision.
