BKV 1 Deák Ferenc tér - a photo on Flickriver

            What is now line M1 of the Budapest Metro is one of the oldest underground lines in the world dating back to 1896. It is now known as the Millennium Subway, at least to tourists.

I understand it is usually called the Kisföldalatti locally. This means "small subway". Its dimensions were driven by pre-existing sewers and deeper marshy subsoil.

As a consequence it has always had specialised rolling stock, based on tram technology, resulting in the fleet only being replaced once in the early 1970s. The trains/trams are very low in height with passenger accommodation between the bogies over which equipment and the driver's cabs are placed.

At Deák Ferenc tér there is a small museum about the line built around a section of tunnel abandoned when the station was rebuilt to accommodate later, deeper Metro lines.

1896 car 1 is displayed in its final condition after conversion to run with a control trailer.
