Les vieillards, quand près d’eux, semaine par semaine,
Le temps a dévasté, tour à tour, fleurs et fruits,
Les vieillards ont, ainsi que la cité romaine,
Au cœur un forum mort plein de temples détruits ;

Silencieux désert où leur âme promène
Son long ennui stérile, où l’ortie et le buis,
Et l’herbe solitaire, en l’antique domaine,
Ont étouffé l’orgueil des fastes et des bruits;

Où des frontons muets la légende effacée
Sous la rouille des ans dérobe sa pensée.
Plus de chants, les oiseaux aiment les floraisons.

Plus de prisme charmeur irisant les bruines,
Mais de graves soleils, de vastes horizons,
Éclairant la beauté dernière des ruines.
