Euphorbe superbe (Euphorbia pulcherimma)

            Euphorbiacée de 3-4 m aux feuilles simples et alternes de 20-30 cm, ovoïdes-lancéolés, cunéiformes à la base. Inflorescence  de capitules composés de plusieurs pseudo-calices (cyathium), dont chacun porte une fleur apicale femelle à pétiole long et sans pétale, entourée de 5 groupes de fleurs mâles également sans pétale. Les petites fleurs nectarifères sont entourées de grandes bractées pétaloïdes serrées en forme de rosette, le plus souvent lancéolées et de couleur rouge sang. Capsule triloculaire.

Autres noms français : Etoile de l'Avent ou de Noël (ou Rose de Noël), Euphorbe écarlate, Poinsettia (ancien nom de genre, du nom du premier ambassadeur des États-Unis au Mexique, J R Poinsett, médecin botaniste d'origine française). Espèce originaire d'Amérique centrale et du Mexique, très utilisée comme plante décorative au moment de Noël. Cette plante est photopériodique ou brévidiurne, fleurissant lorsque les jours sont courts, moins de 12 h (cf. A Gurib-Fakim Guide de la Flore de Maurice et A Bärtels).
