Victoria d'Amazonie (Victoria amazonica)

            Nymphéacée aux feuilles de 2-3 m flottant à la surface de l'eau et aux bords courbés de 4-6 cm. Dos des feuilles, pétioles et pédoncules, garnis de grandes épines acérées (1 feuille peut peser entre 30-70 kg). Fleurs de 25-40 cm légèrement élevées à la surface de l'eau et très agréablement parfumées. Blanches lorsqu'elles s'ouvrent, roses lorsqu'elles se ferment et rouges lors de la seconde ouverture, elles ne restent ouvertes que 2 nuits. 60 pétales et étamines disposés en spirale. Fruit gros comme le poing, épineux, mûrissant sous la surface de l'eau.

Autres noms français : Nénuphar géant ou royal (La plus imposante des plantes aquatiques porte de nom de la reine Victoria, 1819-1901). Espèce de la région amazonnienne, observable dans de nombreux jardins botaniques, ici celui de Pamplemousses (cf.A Bärtels).
