Wood Warbler

So, I was lucky in that I was on holiday this week and therefore decided to include a visit on my way back from WWT Steart Marshes. I thought that I would have no chance to seeing such a small bird in the woodland, let alone photography it. How wrong I was. The call of the Wood Warbler has a wonderful shivering trill often uttered with wings & tail vibrating. The song also accompanies the butterfly-like display flight as the male spirals down to a perch.

I heard the Warbler high in the trees and decided to wait around for a bit. After a while the bird dropped down from the Oak Tree and into the smaller beech trees just coming into leaf. So I sat down and waited. The bird flew around, singing all the time and after a while I realised that photographing this bird was a real possibility. This is just one of the many taken over an hour that I enjoyed watching and listening to his display.

Sadly for the Warbler, no mate turned up, I can only hope that with such a stunning man in the forest with a great voice, his lady will hear his call and come over.
