Rural community, Kenya (2011)

            We passed by many rural communities when we drove from one national park to the next in Kenya. Over three-quarters of the Kenyan population live in rural areas.

Although there are great variations from one area to another, rural communities in Kenya generally have poor access to basic services, such as electricity and sanitation which we take for granted. Availability of running water is also variable. Roads during the rainy season are filled with mud and stagnant water, and may become totally unusable. Public transport is limited and infrequent. People get around by walking, bicycles or motorbikes. They make some money from what they sell in the markets, and that pays for the things they need: clothes, medicine, their children’s schooling, and other essentials. Unlike western societies, the part of their life that involves money is quite small. While they may buy the seed to grow their crops, after that no money changes hands to bring it to their family table. 

Rural Kenyan life is still organised around the land, and each family lives and eats what the small plots of land produce. This depends very much on the rain, and is vulnerable to changes in the weather. Many villagers engage in pastoral farming of cattle, sheep, goats and camels. These animals help with transportation and provide milk, blood, meat and wool. The number of animals owned is more important than land ownership.
