            West Cumbria and Coast. A DRS Class 37 is at each end of a Carlisle to Barrow train as it exits 'Avalanche Alley' and runs along the foot of the cliffs at Lowca. The cliff face has been reprofiled to reduce the risks of landslips from unstable ground that was further undermined by Harrington No.10 Colliery, which was at the top of the hill on the right. Not visible from here are the remains of an ironworks that would have dominated the foreground a century or more ago, whilst the high ground behind would have been covered by the detritus of coal production.

Almost as much a threat to the railway is the sea, when westerly gales blow mountainous seas onto the track, although hundreds of tons of 'rock armour' blunts the worst of the force of the waves.
