1929 A Belgian get-together in New York

            The outstanding Belgian boxer René De Vos visits his compatriot GERARD DEBAETS during the New York Six Days.
Gerard Debaets (1898–1959) was a Belgian cyclist.
Debaets was a professional cyclist from 1924 to 1940 and was active as a road racer and in his later career as a six-day cyclist, mainly in the United States. 
As a road racer, he was best known as a two-time winner of the Tour of Flanders, in 1924 and 1927, having already won that race in 1923 with the amateurs. In addition, he also became Belgian champion in 1925, and won Paris-Brussels in 1925 and in 1926 the same race in reverse.
In 1924 he took part in the Tour de France, but without success.
Debaets took part in numerous six-day events in the United States. In total he rode 90 of which he won 17. Of those 17, he won 9 together with his French partner Alfred Letourneur. With those 17 wins, he is tied for a 32nd place in the all-time rankings.
In 1936 he won the open American championship behind derny's.
The Six Days of New York was a six-day cycling race that was held until 1961 and whose history dates back to 1887.
