The sun shines on the righteous.... - a photo on Flickriver

            The early Spring sunshines lights up the Daffodils in the churchyard of the Parish Church of Saint Oswald in the historic market town of Ashbourne in Derbyshire.
Thought to be built on the site of an old Pagan Holy Well, which in turn became a Saxon Church and then a Norman Church, the current structure dates back to 1220. 
Many alterations and additions have been made over the centuries, with the addition of the tower and 215 foot high (65metre) spire dating back to the 1330's (the tower has been rebuilt on numerous occassions) and notable work in restoration being carried out by Lewis Nockalls Cottingham in the 1830's and George Gilbert Scott in the 1870' at which time the battlements were added to the chancel.
This Anglican church is grade 1 listed and sits at the junction of Church Street, Mayfield Road and School Lane.
The West wall of the church shows signs of the damage incurred when the church was fired upon by the Parlimentarians in 1644 during the English Civil War.
