Ely (Main Line) - a photo on Flickriver

Ely (Main Line)

            Class 47 no. 47493 hauls what I think was a Swansea-Paddington train past the site of Ely (Main Line) station on 11 March 1976. Ely (Main Line) station closed on 10 September 1962 when the train service between Cardiff (Clarence Road) ad Pontypridd via St Fagans was withdrawn.

47493 was new, as D1932, in March 1966. It became 47493 under TOPS, and was renumbered to 47701 when rebuilt as a push-pull loco for Glasgow-Edinburgh trains inJanuary 1979. As such it was named "Saint Andrew", but was renamed "Old Oak Common Traction and Rolling Stock Depot" in August 1991. 47701 was withdrawn from service in December 2003 and moved into preservation. I understand it is now stored at Burton.
