Postcard to Self: Cowley Bridge Junction

            One of those spots that is instantly recogniseable but for me a first visit and more by coincidence than design.  With a following day's work to be carried out from Exeter Riverside Yard the photographer has spent the late morning and most of the afternoon of Sunday 28th April 2024 travelling west.   The camera very much an afterthought when the forecast for later afternoon and into the evening was for sunny intervals "out west".  Having stopped at Cullompton to get a further 15 minutes charge into the car it was a toss up for south west of Exeter (maybe Powderham) or to the north east where Cowley Bridge Junction immediately sprang to mind.  For visitors to the latter the first problem to overcome is finding any unrestricted parking.  Having achieved that objective and then walking down to the over bridge, the most obvious next issue was to fit any subject around the shadows cast by the taller than anticipated vegetation to the west side of the line particularly around the junction.  Wondering whether I had wasted my time, I did hang about at least for something to appear from the north.  In the meantime 2R60 had emerged from the branch shrouded by the shadows so once again the photographer questioned the purpose of this visit.  Fortunately the Cross Country Class 220 "Voyager" unit forming 1V58 (10:08) Edinburgh Waverley - Penzance came into view, running early and perhaps checked back by the previous service's signals on its approach to Exeter St Davids.  With only 24 -70mm lzoom to play with it was really a matter of trying to apply as much zoom as to capture our subject before it encountered the shadows, but also keep all of the "iconic" former "Cowley Bridge Inn / New Inn (call it what you will) within the frame.

My expectations were low to the point of my not even downloading that particular camera until today.  No note of the "Voyager" was made at the time, although my thanks to Brian Carter as he has subsequently identified as 220027. So the resultant image is my "post card",  In summary; been there? Now ticked.  Done that?  Well just about (and rain the following afternoon would have precluded any re visit).  Got the tee-shirt?  "Well Sort of"
