Thinning fog, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia - a photo on Flickriver

            Taken back in June of 1985 on Water Street, near where the Sweeney Fisheries Museum is today, here's a view looking in the direction of the sun just before it broke through the fog. Whenever I was lucky enough to be in Yarmouth during foggy or murky weather I always made it a point to spend time walking along water street exploring areas where activity associated with the commercial fishing industry could be found. Here the scallop dragger "Challenger III" is out of the water for some kind of maintenance. Challenger III was built by A.F. Theriault in Meteghan River, Nova Scotia in 1962. Her length overall was 97' with a beam of 23'6". After about ten years working as a scallop dragger her gear was switched over for swordfish longlineing. After a few years she was rerigged for scalloping. An internet search failed to reveal if she was retired from fishing or is still in service somewhere. These old wooden hulled draggers are getting hard to find now, being replaced by steel, aluminum and fiberglas hulled boats. When I first began visiting Nova Scotia in the mid-1970's, they were a common sight in any busy fishing port.

Pentax 6x7 (MLU version), SMC Pentax 55mm f/4, Ektachrome 120 roll film. This was copied using a Nikon D3500 camera, 55mm f/3.5 Micro Nikkor lens fitted with a Nikon 4T closeup lens, with a Soligor 1.6x achromatic closeup lens on the 4T. Lighting was provided by a 5000K LED bulb in a desk lamp.
