Sniffing weeds, Newcastle, Texas - a photo on Flickriver

            Here's "Dutch", a fallow buck sniffing an area marked by another buck in the herd. Although he looks albino, he's actually a leucistic deer, white... but with normal eyes and a normal nose. This is a genetic variation that presents none of the health issues that often are found in albino animals. Here he's just risen from his napping spot in deep cover beneath Mesquite trees, behind the mound by the fish pond. His velvet, looking a bit pink in the center area of the palm, has started to break down, noticeable on the tips of two tines. A day after this photo was taken his antlers were a bloody mess as he was well into the process of scraping the velvet away on brush and tree trunks. I have these antlers hanging up outside my computer room, tagged with the date they were shed...  April 4, 2007.
