Chinese Sculpture, Wood - a photo on Flickriver

            The wooden sculptures in this gallery mainly represent Bodhisattva's (Buddhas to be). Such sculptures would have been part of larger groupings with one or more Buddhas as central figures.

The oldest stature date from 1195, others from the 13th to the 15th century.

Few works have their original paint layer. In China, it was considered a pious act to repaint a sculpture that had started to look worn. In the Song, Jin, and Yuan dynasties (960-1368), Buddhist art flourished in Shanxi, the province where most of these sculptures were produced, In later ages, Shanxi became impoverished, and this is why the sculptures survived. In wealthier areas, they would have been replaced by modern works.
