Fifes & Drums of Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

            The building in the photo is the Colonial Williamsburg Courthouse which was constructed from 1770 to 1771 in the Georgian style.  It was the site where Benjamin Waller read aloud the Declaration of Independence on July 25, 1776, after it arrived from Philadelphia. The building was used as a hospital for the Confederate Army after the Battle of Williamsburg. 

Colonial Williamsburg is one of the largest history projects in the nation and a tourist attraction.  Its 301-acre Historic Area includes buildings from the 18th century (during part of which the city was the capital of Colonial Virginia), as well as 17th-century, 19th-century, and Colonial Revival structures, as well as more recent reconstructions. Costumed employees work and dress as people did in the era, sometimes using colonial grammar and diction.  Colonial Williamsburg's motto has been: "That the future may learn from the past".
