Shambles is probably York's most famous streets and this group of buildings is possibly one of the most photographed and drawn. On most days it is difficult to get a clear view like this as tour groups stand here to hear the story of the street, people throng to get the best photos and the queue for the York Ghost Merchants shop winds its way down the centre of the road.
Number 5, on the extreme left, forms part of an early 19th century house (with numbers 3 and 4). It has also been used as one of the several public houses that have been in the street. it currently serves as the Shambles Sweet Shop. Next door, number 6 was built as a house in 1781. In 1839 it is shown as a butchers' shop on the ground floor in a drawing by John Skinner Prout. At present it houses the York Ghost Merchants shop and workshop. The trio of timber framed buildings beyond, numbers 7-9 Shambles, date from the late 15th or early 16th centuries. The nearer ones, 7 and 8, house Monk Bar Chocolatiers. All three buildings retain external counters, or shamels, which from medieval times have given the street its name. Numbers 10 and 11 beyond also date from the 15th century but were refronted in brick in the 18th century. These shops also retain their external counters and hanging bars under canopies.
