Jasper County Courthouse (Newton, Iowa)

            Race week in Newton. Court was first held in Jasper County in 1846 in a private residence. In 1847 a wood courthouse was built for eighty-seven dollars and change. It was replaced in 1857 by a temple-front brick building with a cupola. That courthouse was razed and replaced by the current fortress of a courthouse in 1911, designed by the firm of Proudfoot and Bird, who designed four other Iowa courthouses.
