Mary Day Schooner Running in Ahead of the Fog

The 90 ft. Schooner Mary Day appeared like a ghost ship out of the fog in the outer harbor at Camden, Maine. By the time I took this photo she had found no fog in the inner harbor. She is being pushed in by her motorized yawlboat. Mary Day was designed by Havilah Hawkins, Sr., built by Harvey Gamage, then rebuilt in 2000. When she was launched in 1962, she became the first commercial sailing passenger vessel built in the twentieth century and the first coasting schooner ever designed especially for windjammer vacations, with the comfort and safety of guests (not the stowage of cargo) the top priority. She uses a centerboard rather than a deep keel, which allows her to use shallower waters. Mary Day serves for training and charters with 28 passengers. schoonermaryday.com/our-schooner/
