Hartjesdag in Amsterdam - a photo on Flickriver

            Each summer, Amsterdam’s Zeedijk area takes a jaunty gallop through its medieval past for Hartjesdagen.
Men dressed as women and women as men walk in the Hartjesdagen, or Day of Hearts procession in central Amsterdam. The local medieval cross-dressing celebration could be rooted in an historic loosening of sexual mores in the 14th century, according to some, or in a symbolisation of poverty, according to others, perhaps suggesting times when there weren't enough clothes to go around.
 
Onder de naam Hartjesdagen is meerdaags evenement op de Zeedijk, met als hoogtepunt een optocht van travestieten en andere verklede mannen en vrouwen.
