Coras Iompair Eireann 'D324' - a photo on Flickriver

            Coras Iompair Eireann  (Dublin City Services) Leyland Atlantean  / CIE Metsec  'D324' crosses O'Connell bridge on a bright early spring evening southbound whilst working a route 10.

In the background the 'Odeon' cinema on Eden Quay was playing out its final years, on this occasion the 1977 British sex comedy "What's up Nurse" was the main attraction,a far cry from the heyday of the cinema which opened in August 1921 on the strategic site which was redeveloped after being completely destroyed by the 1916 rising.   It was originally known as the Corinthian Picture Theatre and was one of the first cinemas in Dublin with sound for the new genre of 'talkies' introduced in the 1920s and 30s. 
The cinema changed hands and names several times, at one point it was affectionately known as the 'Ranch and Haybarn' due to the large number of Westerns shown there.  It was renamed Odeon(2) in 1975, becoming the Screen (2) in 1987. 

The bus, the route and the cinema have long vanished from the streets of Dublin.
