The march of progress - a photo on Flickriver

            A demolition crew is at work removing the last remnants of the old Chicago & Northwestern downtown yard adjacent to Levee Park. The area is being cleared so that construction can begin on the 60 Main project, which will include a new five story hotel and apartment complex on the site. 

The C&NW once operated a sizable freight yard here which had been whittled away down to about four tracks, most of them severed and left unused for years. Union Pacific will continue to use the one active track to reach customers along the riverfront east of downtown.

The piles of scrap waiting to be hauled away contained some interesting items, like lengths of rail that were rolled 129 years ago.
