Above it All

            Jaisalmer was such a mesmerizing visual treat. I have shown you a taste of the architecture and of the famous street musician who soulfully sings the songs of the desert. Strangely, this was the first time I had experienced the caste system while in India. As a traveller, I was surprised I had not felt it before coming to this magnificent city. 

Perhaps I was made aware of it by my guide who chose to point out the untouchables to me when he told me about the musicians.  I also showed you the lovely golden sand stone homes and buildings with gazebo like balconies in an earlier post. They allow the occupants of the dwelling to look out over the streets where the beggars and musicians congregate. 

This candid image of a woman on her balcony gave me food for thought.. I have no idea what level of the Hindu caste system she belonged to, but I assumed it was one of the higher levels.

 It is hard to imagine that a person from birth is doomed to live in an assigned level of economic and social status for life. However, upon pondering this injustice, I see that it happens. unfortunately and frequently, in America as well. It is just more subtle and less defined.

She is mysterious, isn't she? I wish I knew more about her.
