Dignity - a photo on Flickriver

Dignity

            I love road trips through India. I don't find them the least bit boring. Rural India is quite picturesque. The fields of grain and other crops exist as sharp contrasts to the hustle and bustle of the towns and cities. I am constantly in awe of the beautifully dressed women who tend the fields.

My male guides have never mentioned many details about the women. Now I know  some of the reasons why after reading an article on line from News 18 in India. 

70% of the farmers in India are women, but very few own the land. The land is often in the husband's name and frequently the men don't share the work load.  

Activists are trying to change the laws of ownership, but in the meantime one woman was quoted as saying,"We have an emotional relationship with the land. It gives us food and dignity."

Perhaps this is the message I found myself receiving while joyfully photographing these beautiful proud women. We often exchanged waves and smiles.
