Built from 1951 to a Fiat design in the Jeep, or Land Rover style for the Italian Army, Alfa Romeo designed and produced the 1900M AR51in a little over a year. AR stood not for Alfa Romeo but Autovettura da Ricognizione (Reconnaissance Car). Powered by a detuned version of the 1884cc engine also found in the 1900 Berlina and Sprint. Sadly they proved to expensive for the Italian Army after the first batch was delivered in 1952, they switched to the cheaper Fiat Campagnolo. The Matta was an extremely capable vehicle and their go anywhere abilities soon earned them the nickname Matta (crazy)

This Matta was one of the last built manufactured on June 18th 1954 owned by the Ministero d ell Interno, Pubblica Sicurezzo from Rome (Rome Internal Police), from new until 1969, rermaining in Italy until 2005.

Only 2,011 AR51s were built in 1952 through to early 1954 and they were replaced for a short run of 154 AR52s in 1954 which appears to have been surplus stock AR51s sold as civilian versions.
