The 250F made its debut in 1954, designed by Gioacchino Colombo and Valerio Colotti on an aluminium tubular ladder frame chassis, independant front suspension and De Dion tube rear suspension.

The cars won on its debut in the 1954 Argentine Grand Prix driven by Juan Fangio, the first of his two 1954 wins with Maserati before leaving for Mercedes, with points gained from both teams Fangio won the 1954 Drivers World Championship.

The 250F was constantly updated and remaining in production for the 1957 season.

For 1957 Fangio returned to the team winning a further four Grand Prix including the famous victory at the Nurburgring where he had to overcome a long delay to chase down and overtake the leading Ferrari of Mike Hawthorn on the last lap, during the chase he broke the lap record 10 times.

The constructors championship came to late for the 250F, begining in 1958, when the remaining active Grand Prix cars were being campaigned by privateers as late as 1960.

The increase in the importance of Historic racing saw the arrival of a number of replicas, the Cameron Mitllar replicas, identified by their CM number are about as good as a replica can be, are accepted in most historical events
