Police File, Case #31B: The Deadly Abstraction

            Tuesday, June 23rd
The call came in at 11:30 a.m. My partner and I raced down to the tourist section of town. By the time we arrived on the scene, it became apparent that the abstraction had mostly taken care of itself. The place was abuzz with activity: the crime lab boys were inside dusting for prints, the plainclothes investigators were gathering eyewitness accounts and meanwhile, the rest of the citizenry were milling about, swapping stories and pushing prams around showing their kids the gruesome spectacle. The main suspect was some guy named Ripley. The Sarge suggested we start with him. I lit up the last smoke in my pack, as we sat in the squad car across the street and surveyed the action.

“Jack,” my partner says, “there’s something not quite right about this.”
“Ya,” I reply. I took a drag and let out a long exhale. It was quite obvious to us, as experienced and trained coppers but, the funny thing is it wasn’t attracting the kind of scrutiny from the people gathered here that it should.
“There’s a big monkey up there on the roof and no one is paying any attention. He’s damned angry about something.”
“Ya,” I reply, toss my butt out the window and say, “Frank, you go get us a pack of smokes, okay? I’m gonna go in and see if I can find this joker, Ripley.”
“Right, Jack.”
