Taking Tea with Carlton Ware - a photo on Flickriver

This year the FFF+ Group have decided to have a weekly challenge called “Snap Happy”. A different theme chosen by a member of the group each week, and the image is to be posted on the Monday of the week.

This week the theme, “drinks” was chosen by Di, PhotosbyDi.

What better way to celebrate the joy of taking tea than with this selection of green Wild Rose Carlton Ware from the 1930s. I thought that since both Di and I love and collect Carlton Ware, I wanted to use this photo in particular for the theme.

Ask any antique dealer, and they will tell you the most common response from people when they see cottage ware varieties of Carlton Ware such as this is: “Oh, my Mother had that!” or “Oh, my Grandmother had that!” British made Carlton Ware was widely distributed around the world, but was most commonly sought by people in Australia and New Zealand when it was produced. As a result, the highest concentration of Carlton Ware anywhere in the world is Australia and New Zealand. Some items were even produced especially for these export markets.

Carlton Ware was a pottery manufacturer based in Stoke-on-Trent. The company was established in 1890 by James Frederick Wiltshaw, William Herbert Robinson and James Alcock Robinson trading under the name of Wiltshaw and Robinson. The trademark "Carlton Ware" was introduced in 1894, and the company\\\'s factory was renamed the Carlton Works. The company is known for its often rather garish tableware, often in the form of highly decorated leaves or fruit, and the ceramic toucans it made as promotional items for Guinness. It produced hand-painted domestic pottery in high Art Deco styles during the 1920s and 1930s. During the late 1930s Carlton Ware introduced a new series of table-ware, with boldly embossed floral and foliage patterns such as fox-glove, buttercup, anemone, apple blossom, convulvulous, poppy, lily and wild rose. This series continued in unbroken production into the 1960s, although later designs were progressively simplified to reduce the high cost of hand-painting.
