Central Line Extension East - to Leyton and Leytonstone : London Transport and London & North Eastern Railway : [5 May 1947] : first and last trains

            The massive extensions planned for the Central line of the London Underground were part of the London Passenger Transport Board's "New Works Programme, 1935 - 1940" much of which was caught up with the outbreak of World War Two and thus delayed. In East London the scheme saw the Underground take over the existing steam operated Epping - Ongar and Ilford loop line along with a new tube tunnel construction through Redbridge. In addition the LNER undertook to electrify their Shenfield suburban services.

Unlike many pre-war schemes the Central line extensions, east and west, were restarted as a priority and this leaflet was issued for the second stage of the extension that introduced public services from Stratford to Leytonstone via Leyton. At Leytonstone the tube trains connected, temporarily, with steam shuttle services onwards to Epping, Ongar and around the Ilford loop prior to further Central line extensions. The extensions in this leaflet came into use on 5 May 1947 although oddly it is not formally dated! I wonder if they kept it 'open' in case of any delays.

In terms of graphics the use of the bow and arrow to emphasis direction and speed is allied to a diagram and the use of the joint LNER logo and LT roundel. The leaflet is printed at the Baynard Press in London.
