            An interesting booklet on "the fishing port of Lowestoft; the country's foremost port for prime white fish and choice herrings". It was printed for them by that doyen of 'official handbooks' the Cheltenham based E. J. Burrow & Co. Ltd.

The two organisations who published the guide to the town and its fishing infrastructure were the Lowestoft Fishing Vessel Owners' Association and the English Herring Catchers' Association Ltd. and most of the town's trawler owners were members of either or both organisations. The booklet gives details as to the development of the Suffolk town as a fishing port and the current situation in 1957. This was not long before the almost total collapse of the industry due to a number of factors including over-fishing and changes in the technology and techniques of deep sea fishing and processing.

The port was first formally opened in 1832 but to little success. It was purchased and reconstructed by Sir Samuel Morton Peto in 1844 and, with the main line railway connection being completed by 1847 trade started to increase. By this date the harbour, port and facilities were owned by the British Transport Commission who had acquired them at Nationalisation of the railways in 1948.
