            The Official Guide to the County Borough of Wigan in Lancashire and, like so many others, issued for the Corporation, by Cheltenham based specialist publishers E. J. Burrow & Co. Ltd. Undated the foreword is signed by Mayor Thomas Ramsden who served for the year 1938. It contains the usual mix of information as to governance, amenities and services for citizens as well as local businesses; many of the latter took adverts to show support for the town. The town, a rather typical industrial borough based on coal, engineering and textiles, was of course to become famous thanks to the publication in 1937 of George Orwell's work "The Road to Wigan Pier" in which the author details the conditions of such industrial boroughs.

Two of the adverts are for companies that had a common ancestory. The Wigan Coal and Iron Company that was formed in 1865 to work the interests of the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres in Lancashire and Nottinghamshire. In the trade depression of the 1920s the company struggled and, with Bank fo England interest, the company was rescued; the coal interests were merged with those of Pearson & Knowles Coal and Iron to form the Wigan Coal Corporation whilst the iron and steel interests of the Partington Iron & Steel Works to form the Lancashire Steel Corporation. Such "rationalisation" was seen as being part of the answer to the fragmented nature of these older industries that was seen to work against the introduction of new technologies and capital needed to modernise. The Lancashire Associated Collieries was a marketing concern who handed the sales and distribution of a number of companies.

The printer of this guide is not shown but it appears they had access to Stephenson, Blake's Granby typeface as the titling in these adverts is set in that typeface.
