Foamslag Load Bearing Blocks : advert issued by Foamslag (Scottish Production) Ltd. : Glasgow : in Scottish Municipal Annual 1963

            Foamslag was a product developed by the Research Laboratory in Glasgow Corporation's Housing Department in 1938 at a time when the council were looking into new and non-tradtional methods of construction so as to enable a greater output of hosuing construction. If Glasgow's housing needs were desperate before WW2 then in post-war years it was even more critical.

Foamslag is a cellular lightweight aggregate derived from blast furnace slag and, given the city's proximity to the Lanarkshire iron & steel industries the raw material was relatively cheap to acquire and available in sufficient quantities. Foamslag could be produced in structural slabs or, as here, in load bearing blocks. The first use appears to have been in a rare wartime scheme, the construction of flats at Penilee for munitions workers at the nearby Hillingdon Industrial Estate. The material was included in the Government's Burt Advisory Committee on Experimental Construction in 1944. In postwar years the material was used on schemes in Pollok and Priesthill, with Foamslag units being made Housing Department's own Precasting Factory in Amulree Street.

Quite when production was 'transferred' out or licensed I am not sure but as this advert shows it was being produced at the Foamslag Works that was part of the Clyde Iron Works at Tollcross in the city. It was one of a number of slag based products by then being manufactured for a range of uses. Foamslag houses and flats have often suffered from defects similar to those found in other 'non-traditional' construction methods used extensively in the race to built houses in the 1940s, '50s and '60s.
