Borough of Willesden Survey 1949 : areas ripe for redevelopment map ; Inset of Stonebridge Park

            Like most other UK local authorities after WW2 the Borough of Willesden produced a local plan - or survey - capturing the condition of the Borough and making plans for improvements and development. For Willesden, a large proportion of the borough having only been developed in the previous two decades, this was a tall order as the spread of suburbia was somewhat against the post-war ideals of town planning. The Survey contains maps plotting the various services available.

This map shows areas of the borough considered 'ripe' for redevelopment; like many boroughs that had grown considerably during the Victorian and Edwardian era many propoerties were considered life expired and this, along with wartime damage and deprevation, as well as the issue of multiple occupancy saw much property condemned for demolition with new construction replacing the old. As well as this movement out to New Towns or more suburban overspill sites was considered an imperative.

This enlarged map shows and details the condition and nature of overcrowding in the Stonebridge area of the borough that consisted of mny Victorian terraced houses. During the 1950s and 1960s much of this area was indeed subject to compulsory purchase and redevelopment as part of the new Stonebridge Park estate.
