Blackwall and Canning Town Wharves : leaflet issued by British Railways (Eastern Region) : London : 1961

            A veritable scrap of industrial heritage here; a 1961 leaflet issued by British Railways, Eastern Region, describing the freight and goods transference facilities at their Blackwall and Canning Town Wharves in East London. Many such 'port', both canal and docks, facilities had passed to other areas of the Briitsh Transport Commission in 1948, such as the Waterways division, but this unit seems to have survived under railway ownership. Described as 'recently modernised, these wharves were on the Bow Creek of the River Lea and, in the case of the Blackwall Wharf, were situated between the East India Docks and the River. It was also conencted by a freight line that curved round to Canning Town Wharf that sat between the River and the 'main line' between the Docks and Stratford.

As well as road access the leaflet mentions the utility of the "Lea Valley Enterprise", a daily freight express train and even quotes delivery to the North of England and Scotland. The situation today is radically different; Blackwall Wharf marks the portal of the major road tunnel that leads to Canary Wharf and Canning Town Wharf sits almost under the northbound platforms of the modern Underground/Overground/DLR station.

The leaflet has one other surprise on its cover. This using scraperboard illustrations set against a crane jib uses a fine old shaded typeface - and an unusual use of the standard BR totem, seen here with the words "Great Eastern" rather than Eastern. The use of the old GE title did creep back in at the time, mostly to do with the modernisation and electrification of suburban services.
