"Its Best by Bus!" advert for Ribble Motor Services : Blackburn for Industry ; the official handbook of the County Borough of Blackburn, Lancashire ; E J Burrow, Cheltenham : nd [1958]

            One of the many thousands of 'official handbooks' issued by UK local authorities in the mid-20th Century and this, for the County Borough of Blackburn was, like many others, issued for them by E J Burrow & Co. Ltd. having been compiled in co-operation with the borough's Chamber of Commerce. Blackburn was a well established textile town on the north western fringes of the heavily industrialised South Lancashire area; as well as the ubiquitious cotton industry Blackburn was also home to allied textile engineering companies and, by the 1960s, a burgeoning electrical electrical sector.

The Handbook details local services and amenities, mostly supplied by the Corporation, as well as detailed descriptions of the various companies many of whom placed adverts in the Handbook trumpeting their wares or services. As well as the fold out plan for the municipally operated bus services the map contains an advert and route map for the locally dominant inter-urban and express coach service operator Ribble. Ribble Motor Services, based in nearby Preston, was the North West's major bus and coach operator for many decades and until the introduction of the NBC's standard liveries in the 1970s their red buses were a feature of everyday life across large areas of Lancashire, Westmorland and parts of West Yorkshire as seen on the map. The advert shows one of their 'standard' Leyland double deck buses of the period as well as one of their Burlingam bodied coaches.
