Prestwick Airport, Scotland : handbook issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Central Office of Information, 1949 Covers

            An interesting official publication on the facilities and services at Prestwick Airport in Ayshire, Scotland. It is one of a small series of at least four I know of (Renfrew/Glasgow, Northolt/London and Heathrow/London being the others) produced by the MCA and COI to help publicise the re-opening and growth of civilian air traffic in post-WW2 Britain.

The booklet includes details of the airport, its facilities and the airlines that served it along with a diagram of the services. At the time, particularly before the advent of jet aircraft capable of sustained long-distance flight, Prestwick was important as a trans-Atlantic 'stop off' to enable re-fuelling. The airport had opened in 1937, developed by the local company Scottish Aviation. Requisitioned on the outbreak of war the station was transformed, especially given its role in the delivery of aircraft from the USA to the UK. By 1946, transferred to civilian control regular services were again operating, most notably BOAC's crossing to New York from London, calling at Prestwick. Other carriers followed suit so by the date of this booklet in 1949 they included KLM, Air France, Scandinavian Airlines and the American Overseas Airlines.

After a chequered career, inlcuding privatisationa nd re-nationalisation, Prestwick is still in use as a 'second' airport for Glasgow as well as serving the hinterland of Ayrshire, mostly for low-cost carriers.
