West Midlands PTE - bus and rail services in Birmingham, Solihull, Warley & West Bromwich - map, May 1974 : North East section

            The area map issued by the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive showing the bus network that they largely operated in the southern boroughs of the PTE's area in May 1974. The date was auspicious as from April of that year the PTE was answerable not to the Passenger Transport Authority that had been formed in 1969 and that merged the previously municipally operated fleets of Birmingham, West Bromwich, Walsall and Wolverhampton, but the new West Midlands Metropolitan County Council. From this date Coventry formed part of the new County and so their fleet was also amalgamated into the PTE.

Indeed one other major change had not longer occurred and that is shown on this map in that Solihull, along with many areas to the west of this map, are now shown as PTE services as on 3 December 1973 WMPTE had bought out large areas of the old Midland Red operations that fell within the new County. This map was one of the first to show these routes at an early stage of inclusion into the network and before various alterations were made such as on Walsall Road, where the ex-BCT 51 service was extended to Walsall replacing the long standing cross-boundary ex-Midland Red 118 and likewise on Hagley Road were Birmingham's 9 route replaced the ex-MR 130 bus to Stourbridge.

The rail network was possibly at its nadir here and before later reinvigoration along with the construction of the Midland Metro along the alignment of the closed ex-WR line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton. One thing that helped what was left of suburban rail here was the fact that the PTE provided financial support to British Rail for loss making routes thus helping them survive.
