Austin - Car mart. Two names you can depend on! : advert by The Car Mart Ltd, London, 1947

            Quite a clever graphic this - a cost effective way of making visial impact! Austin Motors were the then highly successful Birmingham based manufacturers of cars and commercial vehicles that had been founded by Herbert Austin in 1905 and whose main works were at Longbridge, to the south of the city. The Car Mart Ltd were, in fact, almost as old having been founded by Major Grigg in 1908 and whos emain showrooms were, like many car companies, in Piccadilly from 1909. However, from early years they had a close relationship with Austin, as Sir Herbert had invited them to become main agent for London and various of the Home Counties. As the advert notes "Austin House" was at 297 Euston Road and this was, I think on the south side of the road. Later adverts and images show them based at Stanhope House, 320 - 324 Euston Road, on the north side and now long gone under the road widening and underpass works that included the blocking off of Stanhope St. I gather The Car Mart were later acquired by Kennings although they survived long enough to celebrate their golden anniversary in 1958.
