The Daimler Fleetline measured 3 point perspective drawing by Lawrence Watts; Bus & Coach November 1960

            My apologies to both Mr Watts and the long vanished Iliffe & Sons but this is a marvellous technical sketch of what was then one of the revolutionary new bus chassis (measured 3 point perspective drawing) of the late 1950s and early '60s that would fundementally change UK bus operations. The two major chassis builders of the day, Daimler and Leyland, both developed rear-engined layouts and which the 'best of type' has long been debated in the industry. Having grown up in a Fleetline stronghold (Birmingham) and then spent a long time in an Atlantean fiefdom (Edinburgh) both had their merits and weaknesses. I then worked for London Transport who didn't like their vast fleet of Fleetlines but perhaps it was more a case that the Fleetline didn't like them! I must say I'd have been wary of buying a fleet of these with the 8.6 Daimler engine fitted - like many Daimler engines they had a reputation of refinement but awkward maintenance - and those fitted with the nigh on indestructable Gardner 6LX had a far happier life. Indeed many an ex-Fleetline Gardner lives on I suspect scattered around the world a testament to the products of the Patricroft factory. Anyhow, in these days of CAD enjoy the skill of Mr Watts.
